Historic graves and monuments

The final burial at Old St John’s Cemetery took place on 24 December 1883. The listed grounds now form a historic cemetery museum and public park. New coffin or urn graves are not allocated here.

A monument is not always a burial at this location

The surviving monuments record Leipzig families and earlier funerary traditions. Franz Dominic Grassi (1801–1880) was actually buried at this cemetery; see his biography under notable graves.

Some stones were moved from elsewhere: in 1991, 58 monuments were transferred here from Neuer Johannisfriedhof. A name on a relocated stone therefore does not establish a burial at its present location.

Research a historic grave

Collect the full name, life dates and any old grave reference. For a relocated monument, the original cemetery is also relevant. The grave search page helps organise these details; the cemetery map shows entrances and the immediate surroundings.

Conservation and responsibility

For questions about a historic monument or proposed work, contact City of Leipzig – Garden Heritage Conservation: +49 341 1236128 · freiraumentwicklung@leipzig.de. The office looks after the garden monument; no new burial plots are allocated here.
