Caring for a garden monument

Old St John’s Cemetery is a historic cemetery museum and public park. No new burials have taken place since 24 December 1883. Work on its historic funerary monuments must therefore be discussed with the garden conservation office.

Establish responsibility before commissioning work

Discuss planting, cleaning, inscriptions and changes to a stone in relation to the particular monument. A visitor or relative should involve the responsible office before commissioning private care.

Give City of Leipzig – Garden Heritage Conservation the name on the stone, any location reference and a description of the proposed work. Contact: +49 341 1236128 · freiraumentwicklung@leipzig.de.

Keep the historic context

In 1991, 58 monuments were moved here from Neuer Johannisfriedhof. An enquiry about a relocated stone should include both its original and present context. A monument standing here does not necessarily mark a burial at this location.

The grave types page explains the distinction; notable graves introduces selected people actually buried here.

Prepare an enquiry

Describe the condition and the purpose of the work. First establish who may authorise and commission it. The contact option below does not replace discussion with the city.
